jazz/improv/modern classical crossover
Hailed by the late Dave Brubeck in 2010 as “the most exciting group” he has “heard in recent times,” the Second Approach Trio – pianist Andrei Razin, bassist Igor Ivanushkin, and singer Tatiana Komova, – plays contemporary chamber crossover of jazz, fusion, folklore, and modern classical music. Jazz festivals and contemporary music forums combine with performances at art galleries, film festivals, and theater symposia on their schedule, as well as interaction with painters and ballet artists.
The trio has performed and/or recorded with featured soloists, such as German drummer Klaus Kugel, Ukrainian saxophonist Yuri Yaremchuk, Lithuanian reedist Vladimir Chekasin, Russian hornist Arkady Shilkloper, Soviet jazz sax veteran Alexei Kozlov and American trombonist Roswell Rudd. As a trio, they performed in Russia, Poland, Hungary, Finland, Norway, Germany, Israel, Austria, USA, and PR China.
Their 10 albums include 2010 “Event Space” on British label Leo Records (mentioned by AllAboutJazz New York as one of the “records of the year”) and, most recently, 2015 “A Day for Dave” on Russian label Art Beat Music: pianist Andrei Razin’s original compositions, inspired by Dave Brubeck’s themes. Razin and Brubeck exchanged emails several times after the Trio’s performance at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (U.S.A) in 2009, until Maestro’s passing in 2012. The Second Approach Trio CD tribute to Dave Brubeck was released on the day of his 95th birthday, 6 December 2015.
